Actually, the F-250 looked the same in 97 as it did in 96

There was some misinformation posted a earlier (sorry...don't know how to do the quote thing!!). XLT has nothing to do with the towing package...the towing package was available on both the XL and the XLT!!! XLT was a convienence package with the fancy seats, carpet floors, stereo upgrade, P/windows, P/locks, cloth door panel inserts, etc...but the towing package had nothing to do with this designation!!!!!!!!!

If I have the tranny cooler is it safe to assume that it has the factory towing package?

I believe the tranny cooler would signify the towing package...I believe the towing package simply consisted of tranny cooler, wiring pigtail, upgrade to step bumper and the taller gears. There may have been some other insignificant item, but I believe that was the extent of it!!! I used to be sales manager and ordered at TON of these trucks...just can't remember all of the packages exactly!! (may be early signs of alsheimer setting in! LOL)
