My sti when we tried to swap tranny's, we broke the "clock spring" and the cruize/horn/air bags all stopped working... don't know if these trucks have them, but i bet thats what got fixed when you swapped colums.

220 on a tank is great... i've got a 90 5.0 and i touch just at 200, with just me and mabey 1 atv in the back.

How hard was it for you to swap colums ? How long did it take ya.

boosted96Cobra,

Was surfing this forum and decided to join...truly a FRESH NEWBIE here today. Had to compliment you on getting your truck for el cheapo $. You are absolutely right about making something good...very good with a little wrenching and a few bucks. Forums like this really help you get to the heart of a fix cause someone out there has done this b/4.

Congrats again on working out the snags on your new acquisition. The one issue you resolved by simply replacing is one that still nags me today. My steering wheel is still floppy like yours was. Ive just lived with it as the actual steering is very tight. Makes me wonder if maybe your truck was stolen in its life and the wobbly steering wheel to hub is the end result of someone jamming the ignition.

Wont steal your thread but am addressing a non-responsive clutch issue. Ill start a new thread on it when Ive wrenched on a couple of possible fixes.

Regards,

Jim

The steering colum is an easy swap. It looked like you could do the fix without swapping them out though.

The problem with them is a bearing. It sits in the back side of the upper portion of the colum. I started to try to take it off, but it has two bigger torques screws and mine just didn't want to come off. But the bearing in the back side of the upper portion was totally gone.

To swap the complete colum there are like 3 wire plugs, 4 13 mm nuts that hold the colum up, and a 13mm bolt that goes in the sleeve that connects the shafts. I undid the 2 torques that held on the turn signal assembly instead of undoing the wire clips. Then you have to pop off the cable for the shifter, and there is a small cable that goes to the window on the dash that shows what gear you in. That is it.

I had to change over the shifter shaft also, which was 6 torques screws. The end of the junkyard one was broken.
