New 5.8L 351W Block
#11
Short block is an assembled block, Long block is assembled block and heads.
351 is a small block also, but that isnt what I was referring to. If you can, ideally try to find a block from your same year, or close. A good complete gasket set can be found at summit racing i believe.

The most readily plug and play engines for your truck will be the 94-96 351w from the f series trucks, 94-96 e series vans, and 94-96 bronco. The 97 f250 heavy duty 351w will also work. This engine should be a roller cam block. Every engine you find will be different on several factors including past maintainence, parts that went bad, how "hard" it was driven.
If you are doing a complete tear down and refreshing everything, a crate engine might not be out of the question. Pretty much everything in the block will be new or recoditioned back to factory specs. Doing the rebuild yourself, you can order those in from summit racing, jegs, or your local parts store (auto zone, o'reilly, napa, etc)

okay i really cant afford a crate engine. i only have about 700 dollars to play with right now.
i figured a used block, clean it up and redo the heads will do.
i plan to go out saturday looking for the block and the passenger side head.
hopefully wont cost me more then 300 dollars and to redo the head maybe another 90. thats already 400 and i got to buy the gasket set which i have no idea how much it is.
Never Evil. Thanks for the info it will come in handy when i go out this saturday to go look for what i need.
and i will check on summit racing for the gasket sets. so as long i as get the block from those years i should be good. because i was looking for example on ebay and it shows a short and long block.

Remember to look at what is included in those kits. That one does not come with a valley pan, injector o rings, valve stem seals, or head bolts/studs. I would go ARP studs for that thing. Most of those kits wont come with EVERY piece, but you can run to your local auto parts store and pick up the small stuff that isnt included. I know you're on a budget, but do this the right way, even if you have to spend some extra cash. Last thing you want to do is rebuild your engine to just have it blow up 1000 miles down the road. Do it right, and you will have YEARS of service from it. And you can do some bolt on performance stuff down the road, since youll know the engine is still fresh.

Oh almost forgot, that kit you picked out is NOT the correct one for your truck. Look under the "applications" tab on summit, and it will tell you what specific engine/vehicle that kit is made for.
