need help! my 92 f150 started making a loud ticking sound
so i was driving on the freeway today and i was trying to overtake a big rig, as soon as the motor down shifted and reved higher, i noticed a loud ticking noise after. on the freeway it doesn't sound as bad but i can definitly hear it but when i'm at a stop light it's pretty loud. i never heard this sound on the truck before. the ticking seems to tick at the same speed as the rpm so when i speed up, it speeds up, when i slow down or at a stop, it's slower. anyone know what this could be? one of my friend told me that maybe one of the spark plugs might have shot out. if this is true, what is the best solution? all tips and answers would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

first, check the oil.... second, check to see if you have any loose spark plugs.... if it isn't any of those, then you probably have a rod or lifter knocking.... if its a loud knock, i doubt it would be a valve.... oh yea, what year and motor?

im not that familiar with the 5.8s, but i would guess the oil pressure is suppose to run at the RM on NORMAL.... thats how it is on my truck anyways, but i have the little teeny weenie 300 6 cylinder lol i still say a rod knocking is your problem, but we'll let others post and see what everyone else thinks

Its a good possibility that its an exhaust leak from an exhaust manifold gasket leaking or the most likely possibility on these engines is EGR tube has a hole in it. The EGR tube is located on the passenger side manifold and they can get a small hole and its very hard to find sometimes. Ive seen it trick some of the best mechanics. They tear down the engine thinking something like a valve or rod issue and get it out of the truck and be a 1/4 inch hole in the tube that couldnt be seen on topside. My bet is a sparkplug is loose or out or the EGR tube has a hole in it.

i was going to say that, but what triggered my mind, is he said he was trying to "overtake" a big rig.... that made me think that he was giving the truck a little bit of hell haha

Its more pressure coming out of the exhaust and thats almost exactly what mine did. I had a small hole in the EGR tube. The funny thing is, is that I heard it louder when the windows were up. Took me a while to find it too.
