Default Need Help ASAP! Lost Transmission

I thought I was in neutral and let off the clutch and the trans banged very hard but the truck did not die. The shifter will not move to the left to access 1,2,3,or 4th gears. All I have is 5th and reverse. Very hard drive back to the house with 5th gear only, so I'm almost positive that I'll be installing a clutch tomorrow. Could I have broken a shift fork? I know nothing about inspecting the shift forks or replacing them. Any help is greatly appreciated. It's raining now, so I'll tear into it first thing in the morning.

Pull your carpet, there's a removable plate in the floor above the transmission. From there, you can pull the the top off with the whole shift fork assembly attached.

I'm going to do that in the morning. I have no clue, if a fork is broken, how to remove it and replace it. I'm probably hitting the salvage yard in the morning in search of another 5 speed and pulling it before they close. I've got to be out of town Monday, so i have to get something going! Matter of fact, I'm probably SOL on the forks being available in town. The used trans is probably my only option. This is sickening. Picked the truck up from the tire store and tear the damn tranny up 3 miles later!

There's for sure a couple threads on here about shift forks w/ pics and all. I'm sure I've seen a couple.

I can't seem to find the write up. I got the transmission top removed and the forks are both shot. One was REAL BAD! I've hit 5 salvage yards today and not one freakin M5OD to be found. I was actually shocked. I'm driving my kid's old Toyota Pick Up while I'm out of town this week and the Mrs. is taking the top end to a transmission shop on Monday to see if they have and can replace the forks. The forks are froze up and won't move. The slide bar for 5th and reverse will operate back and forth, but nothing else will move. The gears all look good with not too much wear for a 20 year old truck. I'm going to do the clutch and flywheel next weekend. My flywheel has been ticking for over a 100k. miles. I've been told that it was cracked, so hopefully a rebuilt top end, clutch. bearing, pressure plate and flywheel and all will be good. First time in years I've not had my truck ready for a road trip!

Too bad you're not in Ontario. Going to look at a truck tomorrow with 100,000 miles with an m5od. 1 owner. Pretty sure the body's going to make it a scrapper. If you know anybody from north of Niagara Falls ....

There's a couple forks on eBay in Texas for $65 each, not cheap!

I imagine you tried craigslist.

I picked up the forks and metal rail plugs new today for $82. Pulled a favor and a trans shop is putting the top end together for FREE! Hopefully I'll get it together Friday. If it fixes the problem, I'll pull the trans for clutch and flywheel replacement. Wish me luck!
