Default My truck won't start as I'm sure everyone complains about

Ok I have an 89 f150 straight 6 5 speed. Just bought it a few weeks ago ran good for a week then got stuck in the mud. Got unstuck amid lots of engine revving smoke poured out and it stalled out a few miles down the road. Figured out the smoke issue unrelated to the stall out a leak in the coolant reservoir actually. It started up after initial stall out ran a few miles and died. Couldn't get it to crank over. Towed it home and let it sit for a few days and it fired right up. Kind of just wrote it off as an over worked engine from getting unstuck. Drove it a few days no problems Yesterday went to drive it fired up but was low on gas made it to gas station where it ran out. Black smoke started pouring out. Put gas in hoping to limp it home won't turn over cranks though
on a side not it idles a little rough and starts rough have to feather the gas to keep it going at first. It also loses power going up hills. I know the cat is bad and the muffler has a hole in it. Any ideas on the loss of power and the rough now Inability to turn over

Another possibility is: when you had the coolant overflow it soaked the distributor. Antifreeze is kryptonite to distributor caps.

Sounds possible. It tries to turn over just don't quite fire up. Just don't want to start replacing random parts for the sheer joy of spending money

If that's it, a look a the underside of the cap should be enlightening, if it all looks normal enough, then not likely.
