This is going to be awful to explain. If I let off the gas at low RPM's, when I get back into it, the truck feels like it's jumping, like the clutch is slipping then grabbing then slipping then grabbing. So to answer the clunk question, I guess I have to say I don't know. If I'm at a high RPM and I let off slowly to slow down for traffic then get back into it, it's smooth and there's no clunk or jumping.

Truck in neutral, turning driveshaft by hand, it barely moves. I don't feel very much slop in the diff. I don't know what factory backlash feels like, but I don't think like mine feels excessive.

Just put the truck in neutral and turn the drive shaft by hand, it shouldn't turn too much

Not the transmission mount.

New news, sitting in the truck with it off today, I was cycling through the gears a bunch of times and eventually I was able to make it make the noise. So that rules out u-joints and gears, right? Since nothing was rotating?

did you figure it out? Pretty sure I have the same
exact issue. I have a remanned zf 5 in my 1987 f150. I used the crossmember that was holding the 4 speed because the mount didn’t work with the one I got at the junk yard for the 5 speed. All forward gears work great but I do get that clunking. also, reverse spits out if I don’t hold it in when engaging. Wondering if these
would be symptoms of having the incorrect crossmember or something else. would love to know what you found, thanks

I have the same question for you! What you’re describing is exactly what I’m dealing with now, including the needing to be held in reserve. Did you get it sorted? I’m going mad trying to find what is causing it

Thread from the dead revival! I didn't even have kids when I created this topic, that's crazy.

I sold mine and never figured anything else out. Sorry. And good luck!
