Default 1988 f150 "stuff"

Hi everybody. I found an amazing deal on an 88 f 150. He wanted 500, but I talked him down to 100 dollars. He said it leaks a bit of oil, but he thinks its out of the oil pan. Is a bit rusty, but its only got 160 000 km on it. I'm planning on doing a large lift. Around 12 inches. What would be the best way to go about this? The truck is a 4x4. Before you say a lift of that size is not safe on the road, its not going to be for road use. I would like to keep it as structurally sound as possible, and balance this with decent price. If there is such a balance. Lol

Do a solid axle swap from a 78/79 f150 with the coil springs, thn get 9 inch coils for it an a 3 inch body lift. Or get 9 inch coils and move the coil buckets down 3 inches to get 12.

Well, its already got coil springs. Think there's been work like that done already? I'll get pics up. That usually helps. Lol

I know it has coils already. Its got the ttb front axle tht came on all f150 from 80-96. The coils for a 78/79 will not work on these axles and visa versa. Which is why I said do the axle swap from a 78/79 f150 with the coils. Thy either came with coils like ours or leaf springs. Sticking with coils is easier to do and the lift options for thm is almost endless. I'm doin the same thing right now but only goin 8 inches

Okay. And the front axle currently in it is not a solid axle? I'm sorry, I don't know what ttb means. Why do I have to do the axle swap? I can't just get the lift springs for the truck the way it is now? Sorry for all the questions, the only other trucks I've owned were 88-98 chevy's. Lol

Ttb means (twin traction beam) its a form of independent suspension. So no its not solid. Thy stopped using the solid d44 on f150's in 79. On your axle instead of a straight housing you have 2 "radius support arms" IMO these things are junk! Very hard to allign, eat tires, I find thm inferior. Plus your lift options are very limted unless you custom fab your own. On broncograveyard.com thy have 8 1/2-9 inch coils for a 78/79 axle...thy do not work with your axle. So if your looking for a lift that high I would suggest an axle swap.

And yes you can get lifted coils for an 80-96 f150, the biggest I found were 6 inch. Its up to you what route you want to go.

Oh I get it. Okay, so a sas sound like a good idea to me. Would the axle from a 78/79 bolt right up, or would it require some modification? Another question, how do I go about lifting the rear?

Some slight mods will be needed. But for the most part will bolt right in. You will need a new drag link, (I'm using one from a 95 f350) and a few other odds and ends. And the easiest thing I can figure out to do (and its wht I'm doin) but since you want 12 inches of lift, I would do the 9 inch coils in the front with a 3 inch body lift. Thn for the rear get 6 inch leaf springs, and a 3 inch block. So you'll have 9 total suspension...but 12 overall, plus larger tires add a little more lift also
