Update: Checked the oil level...nothing, had an extra quart or so laying around so I put it in and started it up, tick seems to be gone around startup. Bigger problem...I know I filled it too the proper level less than 3000miles ago last oil change, but nothing showed on the dipstick. It doesnt leak and Ive never smelled oil in the exhaust..ideas?

Not as an insult, but how do you check your oil when you change it, describe your process. Also, you can be burning oil and not smell it, pull the plugs and see how they look. But first I would be sure it isn't leaking oil anywhere, I'm sure it leaks some unless you have changed leaky gaskets. And last, how does your coolant look? Better yet how does your oil look after you filled it and ran it a little? How does the truck run?

i'm a lube tech so i change about 30 oils per day when i work. from my experience it's really not uncommon for any vehicle to burn off at least one quart of oil if you don't top it off between your 3000 mile interval. the vortecs in chevys are notoriously bad and burn about a quart per 1000 miles of full synthetic oil. so I suggest to check your dipstick every 1000ish miles and just top it off as needed.

A lot of newer vehicles seem to burn a qt per 1000 miles. The Mechanics at work said for some newer vehicles this was the norm. I was always told to check my oil in my old trucks around 1000 miles or so and top of as necessary. I always figured it leaked some out and burned some as well (at least on my vehicle)

Usually just check too make sure its not milky with no metal shavings, I park on concrete and Its never leaked a drop, I also flushed the cooling system less than half a year ago. And it runs great, Idles smooth

I would look at your engine though, not what's on the driveway. Between the residue amount it would leak, and the high chance that it is burning some oil, you can loose that much oil in 3,000 miles. I loose a quart every 5,000 miles. Even new engines can burn oil, its just what they do, you only have a few rings separating combustion and oil, and they wear as a normal part of the engines life. Not to ay your engine is worn out, but its not tip top shape either, cant be if its not brand new. It can be reaaalllllyyyyy good though I check all my fluids every week, granted I do drive it around 800 miles a week. Everything I drive I very regularly check all the fluids, makes me feel better. Its quick, so why not?Wouldn't be a bad habit to start, maybe not every week but often.

And when you change your oil, do you check it before and/or after running the engine a little and then letting most of the oil drain back into the pan. Do you prefill your filter or not? If you don't and you only check before you run it, the level will go down as soon as you fill that filter with oil. I normally put 5.5 quarts of oil in my truck every oil change. I change my filter every oil change. That's why I asked how you check your oil when you change the oil.

I just run it hot then drain it, and no I dont prefill my filter, sounds like a good idea for next oil change.

Update: changed the oil(prefilled new filter) with 5 quarts of synthetic 10w30 and about a 1/2 qt of fuel stablizer, now I have developed a small knock from the bottom of the engine... I think I should just stop touching this truck lol
