1989 F150 with 5.8L - was driving yesterday when I began to hear the lifters chattering loudly. Dashboard oil gauge indicated a minor drop in oil pressure. Pulled over to check under hood and under-carriage but saw nothing out of the ordinary. Started truck again, sounded fine (chatter stopped) and finished driving home with no apparent problem. Any ideas what to look for?

just guessing, but could the oil pump be going out?

Oil pump was my first thought until the chattering immediately stopped and didn't return. Didn't know if a bad oil pump could go bad intermittently. It's been four days now and hasn't returned so I guess I'll let it go and hope for the best.
