In an F150 (as opposed to an F550 with a 5th-wheel), the temp of an E4OD isn't particularly useful. You'll never overheat it, so IMO, the risk of creating a leak or flow restriction outweighs the benefit of knowing the temp. But an external filter is beneficial, and it can be added any time. Read the bottom of this caption:

That's a good point-definitely don't want anymore leaks.
How would one benefit from an external filter vs. Changing the transmission's built in filter at the proper interval?
In a perfect world I wouldn't need to put any but what's your thought on some rtv gasket maker on both sides of the new pan gasket for good measure?
I usually use rtv on one side of the gasket when working with gaskets to keep the from sliding around on install.

The TSB in that caption explains the external filter. On some later vehicles, Ford recommends NOT changing the internal filter or fluid (EVER) - just the external on-schedule.
I don't think RTV is necessary or advisable on a reusable gasket. Install the gasket dry, as designed. If the leak persists, it's not the gasket's fault, and silicone isn't a real solution - just a patch. I'd find the root problem & fix it right, so the gasket would work dry. At least you won't be buying any more gaskets; and with the drain plug, you won't be wasting much fluid, either.

You're right, finding the true root of the problem is probably best in the long run.
Unfortunately it doesn't look like the local ford dealer can get that new gasket you posted. At least eBay has it, bot of a drag with the shipping fees but oh well.

They should stock that gasket - it's an important upgrade to all E4ODs/4R100s/5R110s. Are you saying they found the PN, and can't get one? Or are you saying they couldn't find a PN for that type of gasket listed for your truck?

The Ford PN is shown in that listing (not fully in the title, but farther down). Here it is again:

Thanks a million Steve, I appreciate all your help.
I'm going to try again Monday and hopefully have better luck. I'll let you know what comes of it. But if worse comes to worst I will just bite the bullet on the shipping fees and get the gasket off eBay. I want this leak fixed for good!!!

Remember to research the compatible pan, too. I think it has been discussed a few times at this BBS in the '94-97 forum:

I have one of the new improved gaskets on order but do need to change to a different style pan. Something to do with the area around the holes on earlier pans to have raised ridges and smooth and flat all the way around on the newer style pans.
I bought the doorman pan plug but if I need a new pan anyways I'm thinking of just getting a factory 4r100 pan that comes with the drain plug already.
My question is does anyone know the part number for a factory 4R100 transmission pan?
