Default K&N Pod Filter on Throttle Body

Hello there! Fairly new to F-150's but recently bought a 90 302 and this site has been a godsend as far as helping me fix it up. One thing I'd like to ask that I haven't been able to find an answer to is can I attach a double flanged/holed K&N Pod Filter directly to the throttle body and bypass all that tubing altogether? Seems logical and would open up the engine bay so that people could see my sweet new blue spark wires all spidering out of the distributor. Slight performance dip aside, is it reasonable? Or no? Seems simple enough but a little too simple perhaps. Am I overlooking something catastrophic to the air fuel mix or anything like that? Too much flowflow? Too little? Thoughts?

I would post a link to the filter, but my phone won't let me.

Here's the link to the filter type I'm talking about.

I don't see any reason why not. I have the k&n kit that has that filter. You will need to fabricate some type of rigid connector to the throttle body because that filter is not exactly lightweight. And you will need to fabricate a new breather element hose. I'd be curious to see what you come up with

Thanks for the reply! Usually those K&N filters come with hose clamps and the rubber on the filter itself is pretty sturdy so I'm thinking I can just hose clamp the filter on the throttle body stems and it be OK... But we'll see! Maybe there will be an issue with the weight. Probably will drill a hole into the end of the filter and loop the breather hose there to simulate the stock one. Should work ok.

After looking at my engine compartment this evening, tbere is no way you can mount the filter directly to the throttle body because of the location of the upper radiator hose, which rests on the fan shroud. You would have to get creative. Good luck!

Just thought you might want to see the finished product. The filter didn't fit exactly on the throttle body due to both the flanges on the filters and the throttle body being almost the same size with the holes on the filters being a tad bit bigger. So I got some hose that wouldn't flex or bend with heat very much and hose clamped them to each other with still a decent bit of room to spare. I did get a smaller filter than the one I posted but I figured that the square inch space of the smaller pod filter would almost equal the square inches of the flat one if it was rolled out. I shook it pretty hard and its hose clamped on there pretty sturdy and doesn't act like it wants to come off at all. Opens up the engine bay big time and now I can even take off the plastic airbox on the side.

Just a note for anyone thinking of doing this.

If you have a MAF you can't do this.

Ah true, mine does not have any sensors or plugs on the intake hose besides the valve cover hose thing. So there are probably many people who cannot do this.

Kinda looks like you didn't oil that filter. It needs a light coat of oil to properly catch dirt. Just FYI. The cleaning / oiling kit can be found anywhere that sells the filters.

Indeed! My last K&N filter came with a bit of oil in the box, this one didn't. Not to worry, plenty on hand but they must be slacking!
