Intermittent engine start trouble/help
#11
I asked because I have the same truck and have had a similar issue for about a year now. Mine has gotten to the point i have to turn the key on and let it sit there for about 3 min before itll start.
I have replaced the plugs, wires, distrubutor cap, fuel filter, regulator and front fuel pump.
Steve says injectors don’t leak.
I’ll look up the official details later but I believe 38 is the normal fuel pressure.
My pcm wont connect to any obd scanners so i don’t have that troubleshooting option.
Hope this helps your thought process

Has it gotten just progressively worse? Did replacing fuel pump do anything? Even for a week or so?

bought mine a year ago w 120k miles, got it for a steal cause it was pristine but wouldnt start. i patched a hole in the egr tube and it fired up.
it has shuddered at around 42 mph ever since but runs strong otherwise. early fall it got stubborn about starting and thats when i swapped all the fuel components i had time/money for.

I have 2 engines that were abandoned for so long that their injectors were all gummed shut by varnish. I shorted them to heat them up enough to melt the goo so gas & injector cleaner could flow through them, started them, and they've both run perfectly for many years now. The first for the past ~20 years; the 2nd for the past ~10.

I did the same to a friend's Chevy a few weeks ago. I've never found a failed fuel injector; whether working on my own junk, or any friend's, or professionally at a dealership or independent repair shop. Not even on a truck that was struck by lightning.

In both of mine, I diagnosed them by observing that they only ran for a moment when fuel (of some sort) was sprayed into the TB, despite the FP running & making pressure; AND the EEC pulsing the injectors. So that proved to me that the injectors were not responding to the pulses. The only reason I could imagine (the first time/engine) was a varnish clog, and I couldn't afford replacement injectors. So I took the chance that some heat would melt the goo, and I knew the easiest/quickest way to heat them was electrically with their own internal windings. Simply grounding each bank's wire with the key in RUN causes current to flow, and after a few seconds, I heard each relay click open. That was ~850Kmi ago, and I still drive that engine (in its 3rd chassis now) with those injectors.
But I was ONLY addressing the comment about "failed injectors". Since your engine runs (even if intermittently), it CAN'T have stuck-shut or clogged injectors. They might have some deposits, but that can't cause or contribute to the symptom you've described.
