It depends on the year of the truck. Some even use both.

If you have a 95 and older go to fordfuelinjection.com and follow the link "How to run a self-test". You only need to ground out the single lead and count the flashes in the truck. If your CEL light does not work, you can use a test light or meter, but I recommend fixing the bulb.
As for OBD II in the 96 and newer vehicles, I'm not certain.
I may check out the test feature mentioned earlier, but will likely get a good scanner/code reader.

'94 should be 3 digit.

Some I've had to look up in other books, but sometimes it's just an "oops" too.

Yes, it should be a 3 digit code. Sometimes you can also find out what the codes are by doing a google search online. I have had to do this when I didn't have the correct manual.

By "they", you mean the Insurance Brokerage Company?
Wasn't like he was expounding some little know secret. At best it was a reiteration of another post. It was just an excuse to post his solicitation for business. Like his other post on another thread under this Forum section:"I like your dog. I bet he/she likes riding in your truck!" But I figure it must be w/ the moderators blessings, so that's all I had to say was,"Really?" (I know, hard to believe) The guy's trying to make an honest living. A little annoying, but times are tuff, and he is "Thinkin outa da box!"with his advertising ploy. On the Scanner, you really scored. That's the real McCoy. Good for you!
