Automatic Gear Shifter Very Loose - E40D
Hello,
I have a 1990 F150 with the E40D automatic transmission. Over the last few days, the shifter has gotten really loose. I've taken the panel off under the dash and looked at the steering column, but I can't find anything that I can tighten. The truck still goes into gear, drives and shifts normally, but there are no clicks when selecting gears, it just moves freely. Any thoughts on this? Do I need to pull the steering wheel off and tighten something up?
Thanks in advance.

Had same prob with my 94. There are 2 bolts that are under the steering wheel where the shifter attaches to. Take that bottom plastic panel off dash and look up ther and you will see them. One was very loose and one fell out completly. Tightened them back up and good as new.

also in those clips are plastic sleeves with make less wear then metal to metal shud be 2 c like clamps and 4 bolts total shud be torx. remove and get replacements from ford. they are known for wearing out and falling out.

I will have to look again for loose screws. I took the panel off under the steering wheel and didn't see anything that looked to be adjustable, but I will give it another shot. I'll have to look for clips as well. It's kinda frustrating because I know it's something simple but yet state inspection is due and I can't take it in like that.
