the scrap place i called about my cats said $41 each. once i got there, they said 41 for the stock one and $6 for the aftermarket. its enough to be worthwhile imo.

162 mph in the 1/4 (on water). No muffler!
Apple & oranges, I know, but engines don't need a whole lot of restriction for proper valve closure function. More than 3 PSI is considered "restricted"! But w/o some restriction, on our engines, low end torque takes a hit, along w/ some MPG).
Hallowed out Cat's will cause a controlling containment back-pressure effect, that muffles some sound & will provide sufficient back-pressure effect. The exhausted engine flow slams into a container full of air. If you visualize as water flow, sometimes it helps to understand the concept.
Go inspect a "Glass Pack Cherry bomb". They are free flow, non-restricting in design. But they sure make your exhaust sound sweet!

Anything that can be construed as "Probable Cause to Stop", like excessive noise, is like wearing a "Kick me hard. Please!" sign on your back in high school. Except a lot more potentially problematic & expensive!

I Voted For Bill and Opus
The 302 is a pretty sounding engine with the proper exhaust setup, but straight pipes will not hack it, you don't want a redneck rugga-chug bailing wire sound. but a proper cross over dual cherry bomb set up will sound sweet.
