Default symptoms of misfire?

hey guys,

Just got done with the ignition upgrade and took it out for a few test drives. The first two days I ran a sidegapped motorcraft copper at .054, then today bumped it up to .058. Took it out for a test drive with no stuttering or stumbling or trying to die on me, but still had it's familiar low power troubles in high gear. I climbed a few hills at different speeds and it climbed with no trouble once the AOD dropped a few gears.

It's got a new MSD cap and rotor, 8.5mm MSD Super Conductor wires and an Accel 48k volt coil (.2 ohms primary resistance, 132:1 turn ratio).

Would a misfire definitely be noticeable under these conditions?

Miss would be apparent under load first (or at it's worst). What's timing at? Yr/ Eng., stock gap?

89 302, timing is stock at 10° BTDC. Gap on the airbox reads .042-.046. I was aiming to get this gapping set and then probably hit 14-15° BTDC next week sometime.

By apparent, would I notice a lot of power loss or shaking through all gears while climbing a hill or trying to accelerate?

Your using your fuel effectively now. When you start bumping the timing, you'll leverage some added performance out of it.

As far as miss, are you familiar w/ how an engine runs w/ a miss? Pull a wire & rev the engine.

Shouldn't notice a difference between .054 & .058 unless miss makes itself apparent at .058. Assuming no miss at .054. No difference from .044 till a miss occurs going up in gap.

Your pretty brave if this is the first time stretching, side gapping & bumping timing! I maxed my gap & ran that for a while before side gapping, but that's ok! One thing about side gapping out that far, My truck will barely start w/ 93 octane. I assume your running 87.

Yeah I'm running 87 octane (that's probably all I'll ever run in this guy). The reason I ask about how the engine acts with a miss is because when I first started working on it at the previous owner's house, the #6 wire was off and seemed like it was running alright. Guess I'll just start pulling wires off until it makes a difference, then observe

As for doing all this at once, I read quite a few of your (and other) posts concerning the upgrades and figured I'd just keep monkeying with it if I didn't go all the way.

I also have a 180° thermostat waiting to be installed, but I just put a brand new water pump and 195° t-stat in this july (along with flush and new coolant). Thinking I'll wait out the cold weather til next spring to do that unless my timing bump starts to cause detonation.

You can always go w/ a bottle "Water wetter" before the 180F.

You can use a timing light to see if each plug is firing. Or harbor freight & tools sells an inline spark tester cheap, that allows you to see the strength of the spark pulse.
