my 92 had a 5 leaf pack and the top arched overload spring all factory, and it was a I6 auto, halfton shortbed.

I agree with you that the 8.8 is stout and i do know that my payload capacity is almost 1700 pounds. With a fourwheeler in the back and an 18ft trailer behind it its not even touching the overload springs yet. I have towed a few cars with it and loads of construction debris without any issues. I believe the heaviest of them all was a 92 explorer for a donor vehicle. That load weighed in at around 7000 pounds counting the trailer also. The 5.8 coupled with the E4OD trans is a great towing combination for a small block set up.
