AFR heads are great heads, but 400hp with a stock HO cam is a bit on the high side. If you want to go with AFR 165 heads, that's great, but get yourself a cam that's built for a truck or better yet, get a custom ground cam to get the most out of those heads if you decide to go that route.

Yes, I was definitely going to do that. Any suggestions?

Since your '96 has Mass Air, in my opinion, you should go custom all the way. Since your truck is a 96, I would make sure the camshaft grinder takes vacuum and emissions into consideration since your 96 has an O2 sensor after the cat. Both could possibly set off the CEL if not accounted for. Especially if you live in an area that has emissions testing.

How much would that usually cost? And what's the benefit of 1.7 rockers?

Usually a custom cam is about $50 more than a standard off the shelf cam. I would say probably $350 or so.

The purpose of 1.7 rocker arms is to increase the lift of your existing camshaft.

If you get a custom ground cam, you will not need 1.7 rockers because you'll already have the optimal lift needed for your setup.
