How can I make my 91 4.9 louder with exhaust upgrades? I know it's not going to make the sound of a V8 but I would like to get it as loud as possible while sounding good and being street legal.

Because there are so many different muffler choices on the market, I recommend going on YouTube and listening to a few clips to get an idea of what different mufflers sound like and to decide which one you like best. On my 81 F150 2WD with the straight 6, I ran a Thrush Turbo muffler (budget special) behind the cat and kicked the tailpipe out in front of the right rear wheel. I loved the deep sound. It wasn't super loud but you could definitely hear it and it didn't buzz like a 6 tends to do.

Header would help you and nice performance muffler.

A header does not affect sound in the way people seem to think it will. Sound is changed by the muffler and piping. If you put on a header and leave the rest of the exhaust stock, you won't even notice the difference.

With a profromance exhaust I'm sure a header would make a little difference. With stock exhaust I see it not really doing anything

I cut out muffler installed pipe, kids loved it but after a year or so I'd had enough. The muffler went back on. Sounded like a tractor. Just make some good straight cuts and use clamps then when you get sick of it, it's easy to fix. From performance mufflers to straight pipe it will just change the variation of the tractor sound.
