Default read my spark plugs

Anyone fancy themselves particularly good at reading spark plugs? I pulled these out of the truck last night

Good at it? Ummm... Well let's see, they're Champions maybe? (I think... ) Looks to me like they've been in there a while. Electrodes burned down a bit, etc. There's deposits on cylinder plugs 2 & 3 and vaguely on 8 indicating a small amount of oil is being burned in those cylinders. Nothing to worry about though. Burn color is good indicating engine was running well, air/fuel mix is right, injectors OK, air filter OK. Oh and yes, it was indeed time to change the plugs. Good job!

First impression - look good other than extremely worn out.

Wondering about the gap setting as viewed in the first pic - the side electrodes look to have been opened up greater than the stock setting? Or, perhaps it was just a bad photo angle.

My opinion of Champions - bleeeccch. Have stuck with Autolites - plain Jane OEM spec at the recommended gap - good luck so far.

I can't speak about the gap as these were in the truck long before I got it, possibly as many as 70k mi. the photo angle was a bit awkward. any thoughts on the second photo, plug #2?

For the externally-exposed part of the plug - maybe a slight exhaust manifold leak. As far as the buildup on the side electrode - given the estimated mileage on the plug and the age of the motor - eh, I'd let 'er bump and still sleep well at night.

They have out lasted their use, the electrode is almost down to the porcelain, the oil was probably from the intake gasket leaking, the high gap electrodes most likely didnt get the plugs hot enough to burn off the residue, the white crust on the ground is normal.

agree - the soot on #2 is probably due the manifold leak I hopefully just fixed with a new gasket

Those are some haggard looking plugs, #2 "yah suspect".... other than that looks good. These from a 4x4, I read that you like full speed creek crossings?

heh yes on the 4x4, but it hasn't seen a creek since I've been driving it. however I can't vouch for the first 150k mi of it's life, and I only have maintenance records up to about 75k
