filters are cheap and pretty easy to replace, so you could do one before and after if you want or just wait till you replace the pump.

It's motorcraft I've already checked. The truck was inherited from my grandfather about 8 years ago, I wouldn't be surprised if it is the original. I'm hoping replacing it will help with my rough idle issue (just a slight stutter in idle) and if I'm lucky I might pick up 1 mpg.

Most parts places won't warranty the pump if you don't put a new filter in. Keep that in mind when you replace it in the spring!

Usually the customer doesn't see it on their end but dealing with it from the jobber stand point, they're getting really particular about warranty stuff. More specifically, did the customer follow their steps when changing in their part. If not, they'll kick back the part.

It's the same reason every one says you have to change the accumulator and orifice tube out when doing A/C jobs.

Replace them both at the same time. When you drop the side (front) tank to install the new pump, you will have much greater access to the filter on the side rail.

I would recommend pulling the fuses for the fuel pumps, start the engine, and let the gas run out to depressurize.
