Default 1994 4.9 I6, temp. sender or T-stat

The temp gauge in the cab reads almost nothing, but does seem to move a litte. Do you think the Tstat is just sticking open, or the sender is going bad?

If your fuel mileage has been terrible lately then I would say the T-stat could be open, does it ever get to normal temp or just stay low?

If mileage is the same then I would suspect a bad sending unit. Mine will stay on the cool side for a while, then jump to normal temp then slowly back down again to cold.

I would lean more towards the sender is going bad, there is a chance of a stuck open thermostat but you would still have some kind of temp increase. I have seen a combination of both though

T-stats are a wear item and should be replaced at regular intervals anyway, so id start there and if it doesnt fix the issue, oh well. Only a few bucks.
