Default front axle lock when using 4x4?

hi
it seems like my 92 f-150 with 302 and 4x4 is locking the front axle when i am driving in 4x4. on solid ground its impossible to turn around without heavy front axle stuttering. rear axle is not locked at all.

possible? and if so, can i turn lock off?

I think both of you have a problem with the unit that locks in 4wd. They will clack when not fully engaged. The front should not make any noise turning, unless you have a bad axle. I would check into that.
