The V-8's have an open tube for sure. The 4.9 has the breather that sits atop of the valve cover. That does have a little filter element inside.

My 4.9 did have that breather with the tube to the air box and it was removed and replaced with a Standard Valve Cover breather. I've yet to have an issue with blow by or fumes into the cab as reported by some others. I don't dog my truck either. It's got to last for a while. Honestly, and I don't know why, I did have some oil collect in the breather with the dino oil. Since swapping to the synthetic, the breather has maybe collected 10% of what it did. The engine just seems to run better. I'm at 5k miles on my synthetic and the oil level is about 2 mm below the full mark, so oil consumption has not been an issue either. I'll change the oil at 8k and keep up whatever good thing is going on.

My 4.9 was sending oil into the airbox due to blowby. A few years back, I replaced the stock PCV valve with one having a higher flow rate (a larger opening).. Haven't had any oil ruin the breather filter and collect in the airbox since and without doing all that butchering to the airbox and breather as the OP did.
