First Truck! 96 F-150 What should I do first?
Any pointers out there for a first time truck owner? Anything I need to look for or check on my vehicle that will prevent headaches down the road?

make sure it is safe and ready to drive. If you are not familiar with how to do this, take it to your local mechanic/shop and have them go over the truck. Should take less than an hour and they will identify things that need attention, Now and things that may fail in the next year or so.
Once that is done, most of us do the oil change, belts, hoses, tune up, tires and so on as time permits.
Enjoy.

Welcome! Make sure the brakes work properly!
After that, its all tune up and basic maintenance - knowing more about the truck would help - use my signature as a guide to make your own.

Clean it from top to bottom, front to back and in all of the nooks and crannies under the hood. You'll like working on a clean truck much better than one with 25 years of accumulated grease & grime.

Nice looking truck. I agree with last poster. I did the same thing, I cleaned and disinfected mine from top to bottom inside out with bleach and all. Threw out all unnecessary items. Luckily you can buy every part for this truck very easily online or even at most auto part stores. I had always been into Cj-7 jeeps but the prices have gone up so much that I decided to start messing with OBS and I am super happy with mine.

You should definitely address any safety items like brakes, seat belts, headlights, etc. Also, any immediate engine issue that could leave you stranded on the side of the highway. Check all your fluids, then vacuum lines.
Is the oil good?
When was the last time the transmission fluid was changed?
Has the rear diff ever been serviced?
