So far so good! I'm not calling it fixed yet, but it's looking good. shifted good today even after 30+ minutes of driving.

I wouldn't call anything fixed if I only jammed a piece of wood against it.

Default clutch m/c plate - firewall separation

Looks like I've been beginning to experience the same thing on my '86 F150, ton of flex/separation between the external/engine-facing plate and the firewall along the seal — on the left, and on-top, of the clutch m/c.

Today I took a metal strip, drilled into firewall/hump, and then into the plate itself, to left & under the m/c. Then took a metal bracket, bent to correct angle, and mounted with self-tapping screws into firewall (x2) and then plate itself (x2).

Finally measured and cut a 2x4 with metal-capped ends. braced against radiator/core support and plate directly next to m/c. Drilled board and secured with wires so it won't fall into engine. Shifting like butter suddenly, no gear-grinding going into reverse, no difficulty getting into 1st/2nd at a stop. Not calling it fixed, looking now to buy a part from Terrapin Mfg., but certainly worlds better.

~~

I have someone willing to do some welding, but they were concerned about wires above the plate, and possible insulation behind firewall/dash catching fire... anyone have any advice on the actual dangers of this? Any experience or advice on where to weld exactly? Assuming mostly where I've mentioned doing work, but would love some input.

Also — has anyone just had separation of plate/firewall issues WITHOUT cracked firewall? Or is it a symptom of a cause? Would love to avoid removing steering column and brake booster / clutch m/c if possible but want to see this thing working the right way!

Alnen — how long did this temp. fix hold-up for you? Terrapin Mfg. bit backed up at the moment

Cheers!

I removed my booster and master cylinders and welded the plate and cracks. Nothing caught on fire but I'm not a dumb ***.

I think that extra plate came into play because of a recall - because of exactly that problem. You just need a steel plate that will stiffen the firewall. Don't go too thick at the mount because it affects clutch rod travel. Outside the master mounting area, you can get as carried away as you want.
A 2x4 ? Rather ingenious I must say, although I'm not too sure about the visual appeal...

Default New fix

Bit more permanent, pretty evident from photos what's going on but can elaborate if needed. 1 inch angle iron, cut to size & slotted it ... Braced firewall plate and front frame & secured it with nuts/bolts after drilling. Been running this for 2-3 months, installed in winter when I didn't have time / garage to work on terrapin mfg. permanent fix

Hope this helps others in same boat! Super easy and having barely any issues shifting

I haven't had to deal with this issue personally because I drive automatics, but a lot of guys seem to have the issue. It occurred to me while ripping a truck apart yesterday - the automatics have a plate to cover the hole where a clutch cylinder would go.
I wonder if that plate would be useful in repairing a weak firewall ?
