Default Factory Dual Front Shocks.

How common is this? Is it an option or off road package? My 95 is set up this way. What exactly is the sole purpose? I'm planning on replacing shocks and springs (coils & leafs) all the way around in the near future. Any recommendations?

I suppose it was an option, my 96 F150 4x4 only has 1 front shock on each side. I guess the purpose for dual shocks is to give better suspension control in off-road situations.

I was wondering the same thing... my '95 has singles and my '92 has the dual fronts.

Dual shocks were an off road suspension option. Unless you do alot of heavy off road travel, or run really over sized tires you can get by with just using one shock on the front. It looks cool, but can be expensive to fit.

My 96 has dual front shocks. And it rides like a tank.

The majority do not have them, but I would not say they are rare.

No. Quad front shocks were part of several option packages, including handling, trailer, camper, EB, XLT Sport (XLT-S), and probably snow plow.
