Default exhaust reducer/coupler question

I've always been curious as to how to properly install reducers and adapters. If for example I start at my headers and go back towards the tailpipe, which way do I install reducers and couplers? Does the end that faces the front go over or inside the exhaust? Does the end facing the rear of the truck go in or over the exhaust? Thanks

The end facing the front goes over and the end facing the back goes inside.
