Default Exhaust lesson for those with a 4.9L

Hey folks,

Just wanted to post a quick review for anyone interested in replacing their exhaust on a 4.9L. I searched and searched for months for just the right set up to replace the stock 20 year old exhaust I was still rocking until one week ago. I landed on the Gibson side swept performance exhaust. The install was very "plug and play", the exhaust note on the outside was desirable, but once I climbed into the cab and drove around I was overwhelmed with a insane "droning" . The droning was a factor I didn't even think about since I have had several vehicles with upgraded exhaust systems, but lesson learned.

Word to the wise, it might look good, it might sound good on your buddies truck when you hear it in the drive way, but ALWAYS ride in the truck around the block to see if it is what you will like. I now have an exhaust that looks cool, was an easy install, sounds good outside, but makes me feel like I'm driving a boat on the water waiting for it to plane out.

Good luck on your exhaust hunts gents,

Mike

Is it a "cat back" setup? i.e. You're still running the stock cats

Single or dual outlet? Side or rear?

Adding a little length or a turn out/down often ends the drone. No longer plug and play, but might save your sanity. And may be able to order at the drive thru.

I still say you can't beat the muffler delete leaving the stock cats in place and pipe run out in front of the right tire. All necessary lengths of pipe are obtainable from the existing tail pipe. I used exhaust clamps at the time because I didn't have a welder. Other than that, the new exhaust was free. It's pretty quiet with a nice rumble. Sounds good, looks good, no drone and did I say "FREE!"?

Sylver91 has the best fix for the exhaust drone...........notice his specs........Crank up that old 8 track player and jam to some Lovin' Spoonful. The drone will instantly cease. Or follow Sean's lead, Fire one up and zone with the drone! Lol

I ran a shorty glasspack for years, with a side exit, when they outlawed glasspacks here, I swapped to a flowmaster, and a long turndown under the bed, suddenly you could talk at a normal volume in the cab.
