Same issue but I replace the VSS, do I need to rebuild the back end?

Do some diagnostic work to see if the two symptoms are related.Check for codes and the condition of the electrical connections at the tranny. I think a rebuild is the last thing I would expect to be needed.

A little more info on your truck would be helpful.
But if it's 92 to 96 and the speedo doesn't work that will cause shifting problems.
Have you checked the fuse ?

it's a 93 f150 5.0l e4od trans with 8.8 rear. Been working on a tick but figuredbi should tackle this as well. I bought an oem new bad and dropped it in the. A new cluster and also checked fuses. Crawled under to check connections and they look good.
