Question Engine Swap

I am excited to have just become a new member of the community. I have been reading for a while and have finally got up the nerve to register and participate. Here we go.

I have two well running trucks. However, when the time comes I would like to know what all I would need to do to move the engine from the 1991 f250 extended cab (351 e40d) over to the 1995 f150 extended cab (302 4r70w). I have everthing on the 1991 and it is in excellent running condition. The 1995 is a nice looking truck and runs well too, but it has 200,00 on it. What all would I need to transfer over?

Wait till the 95 hits around 400,000 or so. By then she should be a little tired. It depends wether the 95 is mass air, if mass air, you would need an upper intake for mass air, if speed density, 2 intake ports, should swap out. Both transes should work.

When the time comes I wanted to swap both motor and tranny from 1991 351w e40d (speed density) to 1995 302 4r70w (mass air). Can I use the mass air and pcm from the 1995 for the 351? What is the best way to do this project?

Should be able to. You might only have to use the 351 upper intake and use the 302 from the lower intake down. I think the 351\302 uppers are the same, but you should check.
The computer will probably recalibrate itself the the 302, being you are not changing anything xcept cubes, and the injectors should be the same.

The upper will probably interchange, the lower will not without using spacers when using the 302 on the 351 block as the deck width is greater.

I pulled the 302 out of my 92 truck and replaced it with a 351 from a 96. At least what I found on my swap the lower from the 302 had more square intake ports and the 351 had more round ports and were not interchangable. I ended up finding a GT40 intake out of a marine application that worked well and gave a boost in power. But if you are swapping as a whole engine, intake and all that may work. I hooked up all the emissions stuff. The biggest issue I found there was the 302 is narrower accross the heads vs the 351 so the 302 EGR tube was short. I cut the tube and exteneded it and that seemed to work. The EGR valve also mounted different, but I can't remember the details. You should be able to see that easily before you start.

Edit -> Oh yeah I forgot, the firing order from the 302 to th 351 is different, changing the firing order at the distributor is not a big deal, but I am pretty sure your 95 will have sequential port injection, which means you will also have to repin the injector harness.

The computer won't like the 351 vs the 302, but if you go to moates.net they sell chip burners for a reasonable price (about $100). You can also look for EEC Editor on the internet, its a free download, its the program that writes to the chip burner. You can get a good idea from that if you get the computer codes from the trucks what the difference between the compters are. The mass air may compensate some, but it can only go so far.

If you get a chip burner you can also change the trans type in the computer but I am not sure what the options are. Seems like the solenoid shift sequence is different but its been a while since I have looked closely. Also in 95 I am pretty sure the E4OD had on/off lockup while the 4R70W had a pulsed Lockup. I don't think the E4OD lockup paper will take the energy of a slipping application. The 4R70W has a speed sensor that runs off the rear ring gear, the E4OD won't have that, I am not sure of the consequenses there.
