Engine Oil
#13
For something like trans fluid (stays in long term) I always go with trusted brand names but as far as oil is concerned I usually get what's on sale. I always use WIX filters but oil is oil, to me, like someone else said they have regulations now along with mandatory testing on durability and friction. I've used everything from Mobil 1 to Super Tech Synthetic (walmart's brand-produced by same company that manufactures Mobil 1). I've even used master mechanic brand in my convertible, TrueValue's house brand. Never had any unusual characteristics of oil when changing or issues with motors. As long as you have the proper amount of oil and change it along with filter today's oils are all quality products, save anything that may be produced in another country and sold online. Changing the oil at X,xxx miles isn't really that big of a factor on the engine being able to run, my mother had a 94 Taurus that she kept full of oil but only had it changed once, maybe twice, a year. Had that car from new and put 250k miles on it before trading it in for a car with better mpg's, she was still getting 22mpg (highway and in town together). I wouldn't advocate doing this but as long as the engine has oil and doesn't get overheated they will last quite a while.

Wrong there obi-wan:
Warren oil does not make anything for walmart.-2nd post on link.
Warren Performance Products does blend and bottle Mobil 1 on contract from ExxonMobile. Walmart also gets supertech straight from Citgo, ExxonMobile.
See 4th post down
In Iowa at least our Supertech comes from ExxonMobile.

Super tech uses different blenders across America. There is no one company that does it for them nationwide. Depending on what part of the country you go to, the bottles are even different.

I have to add to this though.....been using Supertech synthetic 10w30 in my '94 and '95 F150, my wife's '02 silverado, my son's '03 sierra and two 722cc twin cylinder mowers with absolute success. Love this oil. I run 8k miles on all of the trucks between oil changes and motorcraft filters on the fords and wix on the bowties and mowers. The Supertech is still opaque after 8k miles with no signs of breakdown or burning. I have not sent any of the used oil off for analysis, but see no reason to do so at this point.

I've only used the supertech coolant for the last two times (last one, filled again this year), can't even come close to the price for the concentrate anywhere else, plus you can get the water and some beer all in one stop. I always do my coolant every 4th year and it still tests fine for cold temp with my little floating ball style tester and never has a problem keeping the engines cool. I used to work at a factory that made their "oreo" style cookies and I can tell you first hand they get picky about anything that gets there brand on it.

I understand, but with the oil world the way it is, where you don't really know what you are getting, everyone has tough choices to make .
