Use a plumbers foset wrench, the one with the self adjustable claw that flips left or right and has a long handle, they use it to remove hard to loosen foset nuts. I think they are 10 bucks or less if you have to buy one.

I just did this the other day. I used penetrating oil and a propane torch, and took the wheel tub out so I had enough room to swing a hammer at the wrench. After the nut is loose it's still a pain to pull the tube out the top through the hole in the manifold, but it's easier with two people.

Also, the fastener on the very back of the valve cover IS a fastener, but it has a plastic wire hold-down on top. I felt it and thought it was just one of those plastic Christmas tree pins. I made the mistake of pulling up the valve cover, thinking that fastener was a plastic piece that would pop out, and bent the valve cover flange. Make sure all of your bolts are out before lifting it out.

Whatever you do DO NOT FORCE THE NUT AND RISK TWISTING THE TUBE. I thought I was getting mine loose on my 96 working through the front wheel-well and it turns out i twisted the pipe over itself and ruined it. Now the bad part is that Ford discontinued this tube some time back and no aftermarkets are available. The 96 has the DPFE tubes too. I ended up using a copper 90 and some silver alloy brazing rod to put it back together. It's worked fine for a lot of miles but was a total pain to figure out.
