I bought a 93 F150 and the muffler rusted off and the EGR is unplugged and check engine light is on. It looks like if I put a muffler on then I could plug the EGR back in and the check engine light may go out with the added back pressure. Does that sound correct?

Everything is hooked up like before I did the headers..... but the pipe that was hooked to the old exhaust is just hanging down under the truck open on the end...... I get the cel after driving for about 60 seconds and it goes off everytime you turn the truck off again then comes back up after driving again what should I do to get the cel out without fabing up somthing to the header would no exhaust gas going up through the egr tube cause it to not function properly if everything is still all hooked up..... never had a cel before

For the guys with broken tubes, you are now pulling in outside air instead of exhaust when the ecu calls for egr to activate. That will cause the engine to run rich and hot. You will loose mpg and risk detonation ( pinging ). Lean condition can burn valves too. The only way to fix the cel is to fix the egr tube. If you delete the rest of the system the light will remain and the ecu will always detect a failure. Therefore it won't advance the timing or fuel trim. If the tube is blocked, the combustion temp will rise and the knock sensor will retard timing. What all that means is less power, poor mileage, poor cat function, high NOx and high HC. Finally possibility of early engine and exhaust wear. There is a reason they've used EGR since the 70's (even on high performance vehicles ) and only on some advanced vvt computer controlled vehicles have they stopped. You wouldn't fill a cylinder with epoxy because the head gasket is leaking would you?

Also just because there is no light doesn't mean everything is working correctly. The system was designed and programmed to work with the EGR. It can't work to its full potential without it.

So will the check engine light come on because the exhaust tube is not hooked up? does the sensor know somehow that it is pulling in outside air instead of exhaust gas..... thats what I dont understand everything is still hooked up as it was before besides the exhaust tube and I never had a c.e.l before or issue with the egr system..... the cats were plugged up though and it did have a slight idle surge and miss under low acceleration sometimes.... could of bee the egr was starting to get dirty but still never a check engine light before.
