Thanks for a good thread, I have been keeping just 2 or 3 gal in my rear tank in case the front runs out. Probably should get half a tank in it if I am not planning on using it really. Didn't think about it rusting from the inside.

Default Leaking Front Tank

After adding 10 gallons of gas to each tank, imagine my sad surprise to discover the front tank leaks. Luckily I was able to siphon the gas from the leaking tank before I either lost it all or had a fire. Nice to know I at least have two tanks. Don't know if the old truck is worth replacing the front tank. As a farm truck, I really don't need 40 gallons of fuel capacity and might as well see how long the already rusted rear tank will last.

It isn't too bad of a job to do. I have only done one and it was on a friends Caddie SUV. Pull the filler neck and you can use a drill bit pump to drain the gas. Unplug the old pump then remove the tank. After that there is just a round plate that you have to twist to unlock and unseal the old pump. About like how a sink garbage disposal locks in. Good 2 man project so buy some InBev and call a friend.

[QUOTE=parisq;83389]Thanks for the quick reply! So, is one tank primary and the other auxiliary or does it matter? Would you also happen to know the capacities of each? My truck is basically a farm truck and hardly ever leaves the property except for gas runs and to pick up farm supplies. Any preference on how to apportion the gas between front and rear? I'm not too keen on filling both tanks as it may be months (if this year) before they're both run dry. Then again, the way gas is going, using the truck for storage might not be a bad idea. <g>[u rars/QUOTE]

Hey even if it takes u 2 years b4 you flip switch to BACK TANK it will be storage for gas but also keep ur tank from getting rust in it. Which will then cause a hellva lot more problems.... which is wat im having to deal with now. Got my dads truck n it's gotta have a front tank bc of rust issue. And I don't have the $ to buy a new 1. I need the use of truck now severely but can't afford the tank n paying someone to install. I'm taking care of mom with her dementia/alzhemiers n house , animals and land n its overwhelming me. Siblings won't help. It's just me. Damn good thing my daddy made me a hard-headed HARDASS of a woman growing up!!!! LMAO

This is not a forum for discussing your family problems - it's for discussing old Ford trucks. If you need therapy, pay someone locally to do that for you. But if you think that you're the only person who has had to be a caregiver for more than a decade to someone who begs for a gun every other day to end his suffering, when he's lucid enough to realize what has happened to him - you're NOT. Get over it like the rest of us, and don't be surprised or offended if you get no sympathy on a TRUCK DISCUSSION FORUM. God blesses those who pull up their big-girl panties - not those who whine.
