Driveline lash / loose play?

:confused1:I have a 1995 straight-six, 5-speed manual F150 in mint condition, always babied, never hammered. For some years it's had what feels like a lot of play somewhere in the driveline: esp in 2nd, if I lift off the gas and then on again, it gives a loud clunk; same thing but less so in 3rd.

I've had new u-joints at both ends of the drive shaft, new spring shackles at the back, new front ball joints, so the whole chassis seems to be solid.

Is this "clunk" a common thing in straight sixes with a manual?
Could it be a worn 2nd gear?
I don't think it's a motor mount because the block sits still when I rev it. The dealership once said they'd had to tighten the tranny cross member; any clues there?

This beauty is gonna give me 500,000km's before it goes, so any help would be appreciated!:)

Probably the rear end.

Check the tightness of the Ubolts and ightness of the crossmember and tranny mount.

Thanks, guys, but --

:)I hope it is a tightening-the-bolts job. The mech's should have noticed it if they test-drove it the last few times it had work done ---

If it is a 'bad' rear end, how much work / $$ am I looking at?

I get rears for $100 used.

check your tranny AND engine mounts...just shove a pry bar in there and see how much movement you got. should have slight movement but not a lot.
