Can't think of what the heater would have to do with things, unless the increased fan speed draws fumes into the cab better.
Your odd engine noise suggests a possibility of an exhaust leak. I've used a piece of garden hose with one end pressed to my ear and the other roaming around the engine bay to locate odd noises.
FWIW, I replaced three exhaust manifolds - twice on the passenger side and the other on the driver side - over the 24 years I had my '89 - the manifold would be found cracked right in front of the rear cylinder inlet.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

Are you sure it's exhaust? I'm pretty sure you can smell a small oil leak through the vents too

I smell exhaust in my cab too but haven't had time to look into it yet. I have never had my heater on so this isn't a factor. Keep us posted on what you find. I will as well if I find my leak first.

I'm pretty sure it's exhaust. Doesn't smell like oil. I don't think it's coolent, but you can barely smell it. I want to find the problem regardless. I'll take a look this weekend when I have time and post what i find. Thank you all for your feedback

Just to add that I just replaced both exhaust manifolds on my 5.0L with the Dorman branded replacements. Same deal, smelled exhaust in the cab through the heater vents. When cold, the exhaust leak would 'tick' but seemed to go away when warmed up.
The drivers side manifold literally came out in 2 pieces, broken right in the middle.
The passenger side had been replaced at some point, but replaced it "while I was in there" anyhow.
Highly suggest buying the Dorman manifolds and the replacement stud kits. The manifolds come with gaskets so you don't need to buy separately.

What about the tube that goes from the oil filler cap tube over to the air filter box? Is that secure? That can cause some smells too. As well as the hose that runs to the PCV valve.
