I certainly need to know more about this. You don't normally kill a fuel pump by running it dry once, do you?

If there is a significant chance of this, I'd make sure the supporting chase vehicles had spares.

I've pretty much decided to do nothing about the compression except maybe put in a thinner head gasket if it's down some.

It may be more important to keep a stock appearance with a regular tonneau and do a bit more bold stuff under the hood to make up for it. Undecided.

For instance: In addition to the electric fans, you could dump the stock water pump that's pulling six horse and replace it with an electric that would run at a reduced volume on the highway, then full speed when things got hot.

I saw one advertised that would do 35gpm on just six amps!

That's fair.

Just so you know: The only thing I own in this is my truck. I don't own any of the companies, including Aerolid, that I may end up "pimping" in the course of this. Brett (Aerolid) had to get a day job when the market tanked and people promising financing backed out, so he can't even sell me one to use!

I'm still going to see someone about fabricating something to do the job.

You have to decide on what you're trying to prove.

One of the things I'd want to prove is that even older trucks can get get great fuel economy while preserving truck functionality with modifications within reason.

The coast-to-coast thing is important because that's the part which captures the imagination / invites disbelief. Even a Prius would have to stop THREE times for gas (51 mpg, 11.9 gallon tank), and they're built from the ground up for fuel economy.

Many of the mods I'm considering are not esoteric or that expensive.

I'm replacing the exhaust system, but mostly because a previous owner saw fit to hollow out the cats.

Wouldn't it be a great message to say: Look, I put a working cat back on, and still have great fuel economy, good power and a clean running engine!

I've been compiling a list of things in another forum and I'll send it up the flagpole here too.

Of course not. This is a demonstration, and ultimately a form of entertainment.

In show biz, your stunt has to work, and you have to draw a crowd.

This route starts in the 4th most populous state and ends in the first, spending more time in the 2nd than any other.

And how much do they like trucks in New York compared to Texas?

Versus featuring Rhode Island?

wow. i can go 450 miles on 3/4-7/8 of two tanks, then i fill up. but thats about 1/2 city driving

Ofcourse you wouldn't kill it, although I'm sure prolonged running wouldn't help your cause for better fuel economy. I suggest the addition of a collapsible sail that you can retract like a parascope for those gnarly tailwinds. Just hit coast and relax.
