Default Clutch Craziness

hi everyone good to be here...so I changed my clutch,(I've done this before in this truck),87 f150, t-18,11" disc . The clutch in this truck has always needed to be almost on the floor to work, but now it was ON the floor and incredibly hard to push. After 1 day I changed the slave cyl.,now no pedal at all.Much more bleeding, absolutely no air, but it barely moves the fork. Called auto zone to confirm part # & was told that I had a clutch for trucks OVER 8500 lbs. I guess that explains why the master cyl failed after one day of abuse. When I bought the clutch I was asked wether it was under or over 8500,and I of course said under,& was sold a clutch based on this. They're going to give me a refund, but now everyone I call says the 11 " only is for over 8500 lbs. (It must need a much heavier hydraulic clutch than a light truck has). A few years ago I bought this clutch & they asked "10 or 11 inch" . Now it doesnt exist. I havent called the dealer yet, god forbid $$$$. Any one ever heard of this? Joe

You can use the 11" clutch, I've got one on mine.

Default Clutch craze

Thanks y'all
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one w/an 11" disc in a half ton. Does anyone know whether the 8500+ clutch is really that much heavier & incompatible? I sure would hate to yank that trans out again unless I have to.

I've had the 11" with both the TOD 4 speed (external slave) and the M5OD 5 speed that I swapped in (internal slave) and have no problems. Your problem sounds like air in the system, they're a pain to bleed.

Default clutch crazed

....initially I did'nt even open the hydraulics when I did the clutch-afterward it just wouldn't move the fan spring & was hard as a rock. When the master cyl. failed after one day,I did the usual bleed misery till I realized the master was damaged. I took the cyls & line out & bench bled them all hooked up together bef reinstalling them. they're definitely free of air. The pedal feels ok but the fork is unbelievably hard to move. I could barely budge it w/ a pry bar. I guess the pressure plate spring is way too stiff .....any heavy truck guys familiar w/ this part?

the disk isnt the issue...it is the pressure plate...

the heavier struck take a plate with more applied pressure...if you have the stiffer plate then you need the heavier MC and slave to push it...

you need to make sure you have the correct Pressure plate for your truck...this is what the MC and Slave rely on to be correct..the size of the disk or flywheel make no difference..you could use a 12in if it was available if the plate was correct...

Default clutch

The only reason I mentioned 11" discs was that the chain stores all said it ONLY was avail. for 8500+ vehics.I only called them cause it's Sunday. Tomorrow I'll call a few REAL parts stores (like Loop Road in Garner NC) & get what I need. Thanks everyone for all the help & input.
