I just bought a 96 F-150 with tow package. It has the 7 pin connector going to the factory harness connectors. The fuses are all good but none of the lights for the trailer wiring work. Also the hazard lights don't always work on the truck if that is connected to the same problem at all. Just am wondering if anyone would have a good starting point?

Maybe the trailer lights are bad?

What you could do is call AutoZone and tell them you aren't sure what you need to buy, but here is the problem, and a lot of times they will tell you how to fix it, even if it means you don't have to buy anything lol

I haven't even hooked a trailer up to it. I tested the lights with a wiring tester and a test light to check those results so I know the wiring on the truck is bad just need to find out why. Not sure how going to autozone will help all they would do is try to sell me new wiring for the truck.

Ah, I didn't know you hadn't hooked it up. I will think on it a bit then.

I don't know if my autozone is friendlier than yours or not, but I usually don't even have to go in to the store. A lot of times, I call and say this is what is going on, and they will give me several possibilities or say that it is usually this problem, then tell me how to fix it, even if it means no sale.

Then again, I am in a small town in a small county, so everyone knows each other here, maybe that is the difference.

I assume you have checked the ground wire and isn't loose. Have you checked the wires going into the connector to make sure they aren't loose?

One loose wire anywhere, apparently, can make them not work at all.

Trailer tow packages have the lights and relays for the trailers under the hood. The relays are in an add on box behind the power distribution box. There are two 5 amp fuses for the turn signal brake lights that are there. The ground for the factory harness grounds directly to the battery and not to the frame so make sure that it is tight.

All the fuses are good and all the relays are in place. I will recheck all the connections again but everything I have found appears to be good. The white ground wire back on the harness was cut but I fixed that and no change.

I cleaned up the ground at the battery but that wasn't that bad to begin with. I removed the brake controller they had spiced into the brake switch and wired it into the factory brake controller harness. I went over all the fuses again but have not found anything that tests bad. Also, the factory 4 flat thats wired into its own harness in the back doesn't work either. Any other things I should be looking at.

Do you have a hitch box in your cab? That might not be the right name for it, just what I call it lol It is mounted in the cab and has red light that lights up when you hit your brakes.

My dad said that he had a similar problem to yours a few years ago, and the problem was in there. It did light up red when he put on the brakes, but it had a short between it and the plug out by the hitch.

My truck does have the hitch box in the cab, but it is a '94. If you have the box, maybe your problem is where my dad's was.

I just rewired my brake controller to the factory brake control harness but the light on the brake controller still does not light up so I still need to track down my problem.
