Default Can I convert a '95 2wd to a 4X4

Hey everyone ,

Got a situation here, I have a neighbor looking to sell his '95 2wd Eddie Bauer 5.0 auto w/ 190000 on her. The truck is in pretty good shape, solid floors, no rust on the frame so it's a diamond in the rough for someone.
I'm looking to put 3/4 or 1 ton straight axel's under it. Go w/ an 8" lift & replace the 5.0 w/ a pre '98 cummins. I've seen this done w/ F250's & 350's, what am I up against? Is it possible or is this a waste of time & money?

Thanks,
Chuck

Its a lot of work and money.... But not impossible. I have always wanted to do this with my 89 f150 but I can't be without it for the length of time it'd require or fund it. I would look for a good restored 4x4 for the same price.

Your main problem is going to be that there aren't a lot of swaps like this. You will be doing a lot of trial and error trying to make everything work together correctly. And it will be expensive for what the truck is/will be. That being said, if it's worth it to you to attempt to make this happen, then go for it all the way. Too many people have an idea like this then only partially complete it or just junk the whole idea. I'd personally like to see somebody do this.

By the way, with that Cummins, you'll have to beef up the frame and mounts. It will probably torque your frame out of spec if you have it tuned and romp on it.

Its pretty easy to do a 4x4 conversion. The 2wd frames already have all the holes for it. Easiest 4x4 to convert is a manual shift one. There is a hole in the floor to remove (false floor) and swap with one from the 4x4. Your best bet is to get a wrecked 4x4 truck for parts. the most expensive part when i helped someone do it was the donor truck ($400) it had a bent frame in the rear from a wreck. The second most expemsive part was getting drive shafts made (well modified). It took about a month of work to swap it all out. Working 4hrs a day on it. As for the cummins the F150 suspention and axles and trans cant handle the power of a 6bt 12 valve cummins (ones in a dodge truck pre 98) youll need to find a NT or T 4bt 8valve cummins (identical engine and internals just a 4 cylinder version) the 4bt is a very common swap in these trucks.

Not a lot of money for about $1k you can have it 4x4 including buying the wrecked donor truck for parts.

Straight axles in the front require leaf springs. Fair bit of modification there

Swapping over to half ton 4x4 can be done fairly cheap and done in a couple weekends, but if you want a straight axle and to do a cummins swap why not start out with a f350 that way you already have the straight axle and heavier duty transmission and axles. I had the same thought as you but I figured it would be easier and cheaper going that way.

My truck is a '94 F150 that I swapped 1 ton axles under. I have a kingpin Dana 60 from an '85.5 F350 in the front and a '95 10.25 in the rear. I say if it's worth to you then do it. My truck was originally a 2wd truck, and everyone told me to just buy a 4wd, but I did what I wanted and it turned out great. I also have a P-Pump Cummins sitting in my garage now that I'll be putting in it here soon.

Pretty much you'll have disassemble the whole transmission and change the output shaft. It's a hell of a lot easier to go buy a 4wd version and they can be had for cheap.
