Alternator G2 to G3
Hello!
I have questions regarding the alternator on my 1994 F150. The truck has the straight 6 300 engine. I have put 3 alternators on this truck in the last 3 years or so. I just cant seem to get a good one. Junk.
I have been reading topics on alternators and it seems that converting from the gen 2 to the gen 3 is the way to go. But after reading posts about this I am still not sure what one to get, how to set up the wiring, etc. It seems that I have the right bracket on my truck because I have the open hole at the 12 o'clock position. It seems that a G3 will bolt right up. Can anyone tell me exactly what one to buy, and how to wire it? I looked on Rock Auto and there is a lot of different ones to choose from 100 amp? 130? More confused than ever.
Thank you,
Michael

Your truck should have come with a 3G. Post pics of the current alternator.

Regardless what output it came with, and regardless why it failed, you should always replace it with the 130A version.
But it's not likely that 3 alternators (in addition to the original) have actually gone bad. It's more likely that the same problem that caused you to replace the original is still affecting the replacements. If you describe exactly what happened the first time, and with each replacement, we might be able to help you fix the ROOT cause instead of just throwing part$ at it. The first things to check are the battery terminals, and the alternator mounting surfaces. Click these & read the captions:

Thanks for all of that info. I will read through all of that to see what I can do. I really thought my problems were alternator related.
The problem always starts the same especially at night. With the headlights on the charging gauge is on the low side of normal. During the day, it is usually hovering in the middle and slightly less. When I first replaced the alternator, my gauge would read on the higher side of normal. I think that is where it should be.
I just figured I have a G2 because I have 2 connectors with multiple wires. The G3 is described as 1 connector and another connector with 1 wire. No?
Thank you,
Michael
