Best ways to improve MPGs.
 

As I have stated in the threads I have already created, I have a 95 F-150 I6. Most that have this engine know that it has pretty terrible gas moleag. But most trucks do.

I'm looking for ways to improve this. Anyone have ideas?

I drove one of these for a work truck, it consistently got 14 to 16 MPG, and was 4WD. It's honestly about the best gas mileage I've gotten out of a full-sized truck. Does yours get much worse than that?

If you are looking to improve mileage still, there are a number of things you can do. I don't know all of them, but here are a few general ideas:

1) Keep your spark plugs fresh. Don't use economy grade plugs, they tend to get gunked up sooner. Make sure you plug wires, distro cap, rotor, and coil are all in good shape. Replacing the cap & rotor is cheap and can't hurt. If you replace the coil, you can get an upgraded one and run a slightly larger gap on your plugs. This should promote more complete combustion.
2) Make sure your fuel injection system is clean. If the truck has over 100,000 miles, it might be time to run some BG-44K or Seafoam through the gas tank. BG-44K is about the strongest fuel system cleaner on the market. It's around $20 for a can though, and only a few places sell it.
3) Make sure your sensors and various valves are clean. Most of them can be removed and sprayed with carb cleaner or similar. The MAF sensor if you have is a bit too sensitive for carb cleaner, or so I've heard. Make sure everything has time to dry before you put it back together.
4) Make sure your air intake & exhaust is not too restrictive. Don't kid yourself, it's still a straight 6 and you don't need 4" mandrel bends, but it sometimes helps to get slightly larger pipe and/or a less restrictive muffler. For intake, they make kits, or you can do a drop-in K&N or similar.
5) Watch your driving habits. Don't accelerate any faster than you need to. Keep your tires properly inflated, or if anything inflate them slightly more than it says on your door jamb. If the tire is under-inflated it tends to flex more, which is an extra load on the engine and wastes energy as heat.
6) Before doing any of the above, read your engine trouble codes and see if they point you toward any repairs you've overlooked.

That's not a comprehensive list, but it should get you started. Your mileage may vary, no pun intended.

Thanks! I ahve started a list. I believe most of my problem is I am a 16 year old trying to drive a stick. I think once I get more familar with it, I will save gas.

You're welcome. I'm working on a similar project to improve gas mileage on my 302, but it's mostly a guzzler because of the lift kit and the 33s. I've done the back half of the exhaust, it will be getting headers soon, as well as an intake off a newer F-250 and a major tune-up. I got 12 MPG out of my 460 when I had it using the tips above, and I'd say that's pretty darn good for a big block.

I agree with '89 Lariat. There are a bunch of things you can do, ranging from inexpensive to really expensive. The two posts that I've listed are some worthwhile reading for you.
