Default 4 wheel drive not working

i have a 1990 f150 5.0l i noticed the other day that i got stuck in about an inch of mud in my back yard and i put it in 4 wheel and nothing happened other then i hear the transfer case engage but the front tires do not spin at all had to use my ford probe to pull me out GO FORD GO! on a dry road starting at a stop if i engage the 4x4 i feel the transfer case engage and there is extra drag from it you can feel the torque from it other information i rebuilt my hubs (autos) about 6mo ago when i replaced my breaks every thing seems to be fine with the hubs no nose or any thing so i dont think it is the hubs but i could be wrong is there a way to test my 4x4 when it at a stand still or some thing winter is almost here and i need the 4x4

put all four wheels in the air and put it in gear in 4wd. see if the front drive shaft is spinning, if yes its in your hubs
