Default 1990 4.9L 5spd randomly dying..HELP!!

So, as in the title, 1990 4.9L 4x4. manual trans and transfer case. just replaced plugs, wires and distributor. runs perfect. But when I'm driving kinda fast (maybe 55 mph/2500rpm-ish) and then push the clutch in, the rpms drop and it sometimes stalls. happend to me last night pulling into rugby practice. When i tried starting it back up again it sounded like it was struggling, very similar to how it would react if the battery was dead (*brand new battery). and sometimes the battery is working so hard trying to crank it that it starts to smoke and i have to wait for it to cool down before i try again. Well last night after about 5 minutes it finally cranked over and fired up and i was able to park it. Upon returning after practice, I jumped ing and it started just fine. This is the second or third time this "random stall" has happend to me, and it always seems to be when I go to practice. (our pitch is at the top of a hill, if that matters, and im braking simeoltaneously)

**side note: my truck has an auxillary on/off switch for my fuel pump (bypassed inertia switch) and a push start under the dash. no its not for security reasons, the guy just rigged it to work.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!
