Winner! I just did the exact same job on my '92 with a 302. Coolant definately goes through the timing cover and yes, I put a timing set in while I was at it.

I just changed the thermostat on my 93 and noticed that the bolts did not seem to go all the way in/tight. so I kept my eye on it and noticed a tiny puddle of coolant on the block.

I am not sure why the bolts are not setting right, but I pulled it all back off and put a couple washers on each mounting bolt and put it back together. That did the trick, the mount is now tight to gasket and block, no more coolant there.
