Alternator voltage Regulator

Alternator voltage Regulator
92 F150 all stock
Driving along cruising yesterday Battery light came on and the volt gauge was pegged in the red at 18v. At idle it will return to normal.
Got home. Got the multi meter out and at idle the battery reads 13.8 v. Put a brick on the gas to get the gauge up in the red and battery light back on. Battery then reads 17 v, to high.
Voltage regulator has failed I believe. My question is where is the voltage regulator? I've been reading up on it and some say it's on the fender, some say it's part of the alternator and that a hole new alternator is required.

Yes, it is installed inside the cases of the alternator, you can actually replace the solid state devices ....but is a chore without a vice, bench and the spare VR. much easier to replace the alternator.
IF you live in a big enough city where they still have an alternator/auto electric shop...they can rebuild them and that lets you keep the quality of your's ...as opposed to an unknown core.
I have seen as many as three in a row, bad - out of the box..YMMV

Thanks guys, I'm opting for just an alternator swap. 80 amps I'm thinking will suffice as the only other draws besides factory are a couple led reverse lights.
I've pulled the old alternator out already but was unable to get the pulley off. Hope the new one comes with that pulley. But the power steering pump I bought didn't so I'm not confident but still hopeful.
Worst case scenario how do I get that pulley off? I tried and impact and also tried jamming up the fins attached to it and using a breaker bar but that just cased the shaft to spin inside the alternator

Good news - rebuilt alternator I bought had a pulley. First place I called the guy did say no pulley, who knows.
If it wasn't for struggling with the stupid pulley I probably wouldn't have swore even once, straight forward swap
