Default Alternate Fuel Tank Idea

I am dropping the front fuel tank, only 1, on my 89 to clean it out and replace the pump and filter. I am not a fan of where those tanks are and was wondering if anyone has used an alternate tank. I also have headers and want to put on dual exhaust and that tank is in the way. I realize it might be an "it is what it is" scenario and that is OK. I just wanted to ask. Thanks. Jim

Where is the spare tire mounted? It's usually pressed against the bottom of the aft-axle tank (which I thought was the single-tank location). If your truck doesn't have a tank there, it would be easy to put one there.

Thanks Steve , I actually thought about that but the only stumbling block would be the filler tube. I guess I could just run a longer hose to it. The fuel door is in the forward position. Jim

If you can't find a 2-tank bed to swap on, maybe just cut the rear fuel door out of one & have a P&B guy put it into your truck. Then you'd have 2 tanks. But I'd swap to the '90-96 fuel lines & system - it's better.

I could probably add the rear door in to my bed. I never thought of that. At that point just extending the lines would be all that was needed. Thanks. Jim

No, adding a tank to an '87-89 isn't as simple as to a '90-04. You have to add a switching valve of some sort (factory uses the DFR) and 2 new fuel lines.

But if you swap the front pump/sender for the '90-04 FDM, and the fuel lines for those from a '90-04 dual tank truck with the same wheelbase as yours, THEN you could add a rear '90-04 tank & dash switch. Your truck MIGHT already be wired (in the dash & frame) for dual tanks.

Steve, I am eliminating the front tank. I would just use the rear. Thanks. Jim

Then I wouldn't recommend "extending" the fuel lines - I'd replace them with new (longer) tubing. It's cheap & easy to do right:

But it can be REALLY expensive to do it wrong...

Thanks. Yes I have the tool to make the lines. When I first got the truck I re-plumbed the lines. Jim
