Cool 1994 F150 4.9L ballast resistor

Hi Ford fans!! I'm new to the board. I'm working a buddies truck. He has a 94 F150 Super Cab. The problem is electrical. I'm a decent mechanic but this problem is kicking my . The problem is starting up after it's hot. If it cools down it starts up. I've tested and replaced neutral safety switch, coolant sensor, coil, ignition module, rotor and cap. My research suggest the problem is related to a bad ballast resistor. I can't buy one at the parts store. I was told to see a dealer. Where is the ballast resistor located on this 94? The problem now appears during driving. The truck will turn off. Sometimes it starts right up. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to start up.

Suggestions appreciated!!

Have you checked the computer for codes? Check for codes before you do or buy anything else. It may be having a problem with the PIP sensor.

How do I check the codes? What is a PIP sensor? Where is it located?

Detailed description of how to check codes in the maintenance section under "Diagnose trouble codes". The PIP is the Profile Ignition Pick-up or Hall Effect sensor. It is located in the distributor. It basically tells the ignition module the position of the distributor, and then the ignition module tells the coil to fire.

The 94 does not have ODBII on it. I have an ODBII scanner.

Does ODBI (or Ford equivalent) have a way to be read without a scanner?

The ignition module is new.

I'll have to check on the PIP or hall affect sensor. WTH do parts stores call them? I assume it's the pickup coil. Great, the distributor has to come out.

Yes - the codes on an OBDI can be read without a scanner. The 'how-to' is somewhere here on the site - not to be intentionally vague - I just haven't searched for it, but I know it's here somewhere.

However, you'll still need the super double-secret light flashy decoder list - available through a simple web search :-)~

Thanks for the help fellas. I'm buying the flashing scanner tomorrow. $29.99 at Autozone. I'll look through the "how to" section.

So, does this year model have a ballast resistor?

You don't need to buy anything to check the codes. If you want help, at least read and follow our suggestions. Post your codes here and someone will tell you what they mean and what to check.

I guess I've been referring people to the wrong thread, but now it's in there. Same place, click on the link I put in there and it will show you how to check codes.

Thanks! I thought I was going nuts!! Sure enough a PIP code is stored. I'm putting in a new distributor. Hopefully that solves the problem. I'll report back.
